Description

Learning to play drums on Roland V Drums - One of my favorite aspects of music is the creativity that it brings out in individuals as they grow in their craft. Sometimes when you are learning an instrument as I am with the drums, you may spend more time playing along to other songs then creating your own. While that is a necessary component to learning and helps in understanding different styles, it can be a bit monotonous. I've found a sort-of "workaround" for this - utilizing what I've learned so far to introduce the drum kit into songs that have little to no percussion instead of creating entirely new songs and beats from scratch. I recently attempted this with Cold Play's "Live in Jordan - Arabesque" and immensely enjoyed the process and experience. With that in mind, I wanted to try my hand at another one of my favorite songs that is light on the percussion side, Como Quien Pierde Una Estrella, by Alejandro Fernandez. As one of the most successful Hispanic music artists in history, Alejandro Fernandez's voice has filled homes, stadiums and hearts across the globe since 1976 when he first accompanied his father, Vicente Fernandez on stage in Guadlajara, at the young age of 5. Our home too was consistently filled with the dynamic and captivating sounds of his voice, strings, steady bass and horns coming together an almost magical union of audible feel during my youth. Como Quien Pierde Una Estrella in particular was, and still is one of my favorite songs of all time - across all genres. In my opinion this song captures an essence that epitomizes what "mariachi music" is supposed to sound like. The flow and tempo of the song are such that in the original version percussion instruments are not necessary to create it's fullness, and are almost entirely non-existent except for a small tempo tick that kicks in during 2 separate parts of the song. In this version of Como Quien Pierde Una Estrella performed live at Spain's "Palacio de Congresso IFEMA" in 2005, Alejandro is joined on stage by Diego el Cigala. Diego, who is know globally for his famous Romani Flamenco gypsy style of singing brings his incredibly strong voice along with the fusion of faster flemenco style tempos. They are also accompanied by a full 28 piece band, which in addition to the faster tempo gives this song a whole new feel. Although there is percussion in this version it is somewhat limited to bongos, chimes, and does not have a full kit accompaniment. Hope it works - let me know what you think.
