Old Irish Gaelic - The oldest known extant song/poem in Anglo-Celtic Isles. A triumph of the spirit of the earth and man over gods.

The lyrics to the 'Song of Amergin' and it's origins remain a mystery of the ages. It is thought to be the oldest poem still existing in the Atlantic Archipeligo. Amergin Glúingel ("white knees") (also spelled Amhairghin Glúngheal) or Glúnmar ("big knee") was a bard, druid and judge for the Milesians in the Irish/Gael Mythological Cycle. The Milesians were the first of the Gaels, and travelled to Éire (Ireland) to find it inhabited by the Tuath(a) Dé Danann ("Tribe of Gods") - A race/pantheon of pre-Christian pagan deities. The Milesians and Tuath Dé Danann agreed to battle for the land of Éire and Amergin acted as an impartial judge to the engagement.

The Milesians agreed to leave the island and retreat a short distance back out to sea - beyond the ninth wave. Upon a signal, they would move back towards the land to engage in battle. But, once the Milesians were back out to sea, the druids of the Tuath Dé Danann raised a magical storm to keep them from returning to Éire. Upon seeing this, Amergin stepped forward and began to play music and sing an incantation which would invoke the spirit of Éire and disperse the spell. This has come to be known as the "Song of Amergin"...
