St Peter's Hope (John 21)
====================
Dawn finds me ankle-deep
on an old boat in yesterday's water
Casting towards what I can still measure:
The lifeless surface
of an inland sea
I call this being optimistic
Though the net frames only
what I will not catch
My claim about this new enterprise:
Just a statement of what cannot be
But who would shed these fishing clothes
Drop these nets, and plunge into dark water
To break towards that shoreline fire
Where food has been
prepared too soon for me.
Rory Stewart
