The ''Battle Hymn of the Republic'' was written by Julia Ward Howe and was composed by William Steffe (1856), who collected and edited the musical tune for a camp-meeting song with the traditional "Glory Hallelujah." The music was arranged by James E. Greenleaf, C. S. Hall, and C. B. Marsh (1861).
