Charlie Barnet & His Orchestra plays “Cherokee” on Bluebird B-10373, recorded on July 17, 1939.
The arrangement here was done by Billy May, who was a fine trumpeter.
Charlie Barnet's ensemble was never in the very top tier of bands. Those very top bands were led by Glenn Miller, Harry James, the Dorseys, Duke Ellington, Count Basie, and Benny Goodman (maybe Woody Herman for a year or two).
But Charlie Barnet made a contribution to the big band era. "Cherokee" was be remembered forever.
Barnet took risks as a musician, and I admire that. He played tenor, alto, and soprano sax.
His tenor playing reminds me of Coleman Hawkins.
When he plays on soprano sax, Barnet can sound like Johnny Hodges.
He was best on alto.
Charles Daly Barnet was born in New York City on October 26, 1913.
He was only 25 when he recorded his classic version of "Cherokee"!
Other important recordings are "Skyliner," "The Wrong Idea," "Scotch and Soda," and "Southland Shuffle."
Charlie Barnet came from a wealthy background, but he was probably not a millionaire. Otherwise he could have kept some bands going, not breaking them up. His maternal grandfather, Charles Frederick Dały, was a prominent man in railroading and banking.
He lost Billy May to Glenn Miller. He lost Chubby Jackson to Woody Herman.
He died on September 4, 1991.
