A Chinese coast guard ship collided with a Chinese navy vessel while chasing a Philippine coast guard ship in the South China Sea.

Video captured onboard the Philippine vessel shows the two Chinese ships crashing into each other, coming dangerously close to the Filipino ship on Monday.

The Chinese coast guard vessel sustained “substantial damage,” and Filipino authorities said they offered assistance and medical aid after the crash.

The collision occurred during aggressive manoeuvres, as Chinese coast guard ships pursued and staged dangerous blocking tactics against Philippine coast guard and fishing vessels near Scarborough Shoal - a rich fishing atoll in contested waters off the northwestern Philippines.

Both China and the Philippines claim Scarborough Shoal and other features in the South China Sea.
