Description

Heungbo-ga is one of five madangs or songs of pansori and is also called Baktaryeong. Heungbo, the kind but poor younger brother, fixes the broken leg of a swallow. The grateful swallow later brings him some gourds seeds, which he sows. When the time comes for Heungbo to harvest the full-grown gourd, he opens it with a saw. To his great surprise, all sorts of treasures fall out from the gourd and Heungbo becomes a rich man. On the other hand, his rich but mean older brother, Nolbo breaks the swallow’s leg on purpose before fixing it. Nolbo also sows the gourd seeds the swallow brings him, but when he breaks it open, goblins and monsters come out instead, and he perishes.

This tale of two brothers is weaved into pansori form, and the Gamgyeryong sings about the monk picking an auspicious site for Heungbo to build his house.
