Bach regularly conducted concerts with the Collegium Musicum, a civic musical society that would later evolve into the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra.
It is believed that this Suite No. 2 was written to showcase a virtuoso flutist—likely a member of the ensemble at the time.
During that period, the suite form incorporating French-style dances was popular across Europe, and Bach embraced this trend in his composition.
