Legendary Percussionist Pete Escovedo is a percussionist, innovator, arranger band leader and writer who broke down the barriers between Smooth Jazz, Salsa, Latin Jazz and contemporary music. His name has been synonymous in the music industry for more than 50 years. His daughter is singer-percussionist Sheila E..
In 1970 Pete and his brother, Coke formed the band “Azteca” that toured the United States with Stevie Wonder and The Temptations. They recorded two albums on Columbia records which are now considered collector’s items, “Azteca” and “Pyramid of the Moon”.
After performing and touring with the Carlos Santana band, in 1978 Pete and daughter Sheila E. recorded two albums on Fantasy records “Solo Two” and “Happy Together” which were produced by Billy Cobham.
Pete’s versatility as a Percussionist has been featured in performances and recordings by a wide range of artists such as Carlos Santana, Tito Puente, Herbie Hancock, Andy Narell, Prince, and the list goes on.
With his Orchestra, Pete has performed on two occasions at the White House for President Obama. He has recorded 9 acclaimed solo albums, 2 albums with his daughter Sheila E., and the Latina Familia live album with Sheila E. and Tito Puente. The entire family has gotten together as the “E Family” to record the album “Now and Forever”, featuring Pete Escovedo, Sheila E., Juan Escovedo and Peter Michael Escovedo. He has received numerous ‘Musician of The Year’ awards while owning four ‘Escovedo’ clubs in the Bay Area. His latest album is entitled Pete Escovedo – Back to the Bay.’
Recently, Pete released his personal account of his life as a musician, artist, and patriarch of his musical family in his new memoir, My Life in the Key of E. Pete describes the ups and downs of his extraordinary life and career, starting with his early years navigating family disconnection and poverty. It’s a thoughtful and revealing look into the life of a musical icon.
Today Mr. Pete Escovedo leads one of the top Latin-Jazz Orchestras in the United States performing his own unique sound and continues to deliver his music throughout the world. Happy birthday Pete.
