In the summer of 1974, Kingston’s Trenchtown was alive with militant basslines and the scent of ganja smoke drifting through the zinc fences. Sister Shilah, a fiery young vocalist with a voice as smooth as honey yet sharp as a cutlass, entered the scene with a mission — to chant truth to power. Backed by the underground “Lion’s Workshop” band, she recorded Conscious Business, an uncompromising roots reggae album aimed at exposing political corruption, street hustlers, and the struggle of the working class.

Shilah’s lyrics mixed Rastafarian spirituality with streetwise storytelling, making each track a weapon against Babylon’s oppression. But before it could hit the presses, the masters mysteriously vanished — rumored to be seized during a police raid targeting “subversive” music. For decades, Conscious Business lived only in whispered legends among reggae collectors, a lost gem from the golden age.

Today, the few surviving dubplates, scratched and hiss-filled, still carry that raw, 1974 analog warmth — proof that Sister Shilah’s words were too powerful to silence forever.
