Whenever I explain that an official tea ceremony takes 4 hours, a lot of people are super surprised. It’s probably because many people think that tea ceremonies are just about drinking matcha. You actually do a lot of other things too.

For example, examining the tea room, preparing the charcoal, eating Kaiseki meals and tea sweets, taking a break outside at the waiting area, doing the Koicha thick matcha and Usucha thin matcha procedures.

Everything you do during the tea ceremony has rules for how to do them for both the host and guests, and it’ll take forever to explain everything in detail. And except for the one short break time you have in between, you will have to sit with your legs folded for a long time.

However strictly speaking there are different types of tea ceremonies, and there are shortened versions which don’t have the meal or only serve the Usucha thin matcha.

You can of course enjoy tea ceremony just watching the thin matcha procedure too, so it’d be great if you could experience it when you come to Japan.
